No settlement in sight on sixth day of strike at Maruti’s Manesar plant

The fresh strike at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant ended its sixth day today, with production at a complete standstill and workers continuing to demand that the management reinstate all suspended and casual employees.
The situation has worsened with workers at Suzuki Powertrain India Ltd (SPIL) and Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt Ltd (SMIPL) striking in support of their colleagues at Maruti Suzuki India's (MSI) Manesar plant.
A company spokesperson told PTI that the plant was still captive in the hands of striking workers and no production had been registered at the Manesar plant.
The company has taken a hard hit, not only on account of the strike by its own workers, but also due to the supply shortage of engines and transmissions from SPIL.
MSI's production was now heading to a complete halt, with its main Gurgaon unit's output down 64 per cent yesterday than the normal daily output of 2,800 units due on parts supply constraints caused by the strike at SPIL.
On 10 October, the workers were slapped a "breach of settlement" notice in connection with the agreement that was signed on 1 October to end the 33-day-long impasse. They have been asked to respond to the notice within the next 48 hours.
