Nokia intrroduces E6, announces end of Symbian from 2016

Leading cellphone maker Nokia yesterday said it would phase out its mobile operating system Symbian by 2016 and the recently showcased Nokia N9 would be the first and last handset in its portfolio on Meego platform.

The platform was jointly developed by Nokia and leading chipmaker Intel.

''We will have work on Symbian till 2016,'' Nokia India director (marketing) Viral Oza said at an event in New Delhi.

Oza also mentioned that Nokia N9 smartphone would be the first and last phone to have Meego platform. The platform was touted as Intel's strategy to make an entry into the mobile handset business.

According to Oza, Nokia N9 users would continue to get support from the company throughout the product lifecycle.

''We will launch N9 on Meego platform and take the learnings from there,'' Oza said.
