The Orissa government yesterday cleared the capacity expansion of Vedanta's alumina refinery at Lanjigarh to 6 mtpa, and also allowed it to increase the throughput of its Jharsuguda smelter to 1.6 mtpa, according to an official source quoted in a Hindustan Times report.

According to the source the company would invest Rs37,440 crore into the two projects.

The proposal was cleared at a meeting of the State Level Single Window Authority (SLSWA) chaired by chief secretary TK Mishra in Bhubaneshwar.

According to an unnamed senior official of the industries department quoted in the report, the approval would be referred to the High Level Clearance Authority (HLCA) chaired by chief minister Naveen Patnaik.

Vedanta operates a 1-mtpa capacity alumina refinery at Lanjigarh in Kalahandi district for which it is seeking an expansion to 6 mtpa, the official said.

Additionally, its proposal for the expansion of its smelter plant at Jharsuguda from 0.25 mtpa to 1.6 mtpa also received the SLSWA's nod.
