Power-packed batteries, holographic cell phones in 5 years, predicts IBM
25 Dec 2010
According to an IBM research report, vastly more powerful batteries and holographic cell phones would be developed in the future.
In its list of predictions of future technologies based on a survey which polled 3,000 IBM scientists, the technology giant said, cities heated by servers, holographic cell phones and advanced city traffic monitoring as among the most promising technologies of the next five years, reports Bloomberg.
Batteries that 'breathe' air and the development of environment sensors also figure on the list.
According to Josephine Cheng, a vice president at IBM's Almaden lab who spoke to the agency all this demonstrated a real innovation culture at IBM and willingness to devote itself to solving some of the world's biggest problems.
The company predicts advances in battery design beyond lithium-ion construction leading to more energy dense materials, greatly boosting their power capacity and allowing recharge from the air around them.
Earlier in the month, IBM took steps to usher in a better future to the island nation of Singapore, with a collaboration under which IBM researchers would collaborate with scientists and engineers from public agencies in Singapore to improve the quality of its urban services.
The research effort would focus on use of sensor networks to more effectively model, predict and manage the use of natural and physical infrastructure resources – water, transport and energy.
