Railways’ revenue earnings up 10.20 per cent in 2011

Total approximate earnings of Indian Railways on originating basis during stood at Rs71,613.12 crore during the period 1 April to 20 December 2011, recording a growth of 10.20 per cent from Rs64,982.35 crore during the same period last year.
During the period, total goods earnings of the Railways have gone up from Rs43,257.89 crore to Rs47,653.34 crore, an increase of 10.16 per cent. Total passenger revenue earnings at Rs20,249.84 crore increased by 9.45 per cent from Rs18,501.61 crore during the same period of last year.
Total number of passengers booked during the period 1 April to 20 December 2011 were 5,986.86 million compared with 5,691.04 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 5.20 per cent.
Railways have carried 618.00 million tonnes of revenue earning freight traffic between 1 April and 30 November 2011. This is an increase of 24.56 million tonnes (4.14 per cent) over the freight traffic of 593.44 million tonnes actually carried during the corresponding period last year.
In the calendar year 2011, scrap sale fetched Rs3,748.68 crore for the Railways up till November 2011.
