Railways' revenue rises 10.74 per cent to nearly Rs8,081 crore in April

Indian Railways' total earnings on an originating basis rose 10.74 per cent to Rs8,080.55 crore during April 2011 compared to Rs7,296.69 crore during the same period last year.

Total earnings from goods traffic showed an increase of 12.42 per cent at Rs5,565.53 crore during April 2011 compared to Rs4,950.64 crore in April 2010.

Total passenger revenue earnings in April 2011 rose 7.09 per cent to Rs2,213.05 crore compared to Rs2,066.46 crore during the same period last year.

Revenue from other coaching amounted to Rs223.07 crore during April 2011 compared to Rs201.92 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 10.47 per cent.

The total number of passengers booked during April 2011 stood at 657.75 million compared to 624.54 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 5.32 per cent.

The number of passengers in the suburban and non-suburban sectors during April 2011 stood at 333.12 million and 324.63 million, respectively, compared to 319.68 million and 304.86 million during the same period last year - an increase of 4.20 per cent and 6.48 per cent, respectively.

Railways carried 77.52 million tonnes of revenue-earning freight in April 2011 - an increase of 5.35 million tonnes (7.41 per cent) over the freight traffic of 72.17 million tonnes actually carried by the Railways during the same period last year.
