Railways' revenue up 8.56 per cent in April-January 2009-10

The Indian Railways has reported an 8.56 per cent increase in revenue in the first ten months of the current financial year (April 2009-January 2010) with total income of Rs70,501.65 crore compared with Rs64,943.32 crore during the same period last year.

Total revenue from goods traffic has gone up 8.47 per cent to Rs47,763.29 crore during April-January 2009-10 from Rs44,035.66 crore during April-January 2009-09.

Total passenger revenue earnings during the first ten months of the financial year 2009-10 were Rs19,393.26 crore compared with Rs18,057.41 crore during the same period last year - an increase of 7.40 per cent.

Revenue earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs1,903.31 crore during April-January 2009-10 compared with Rs1,666.54 crore during the same period last fiscal, an increase of 14.21 per cent.

Railways carried a total of approximately 6,188.78 million passengers during April-January 2009-10 compared with 5,917.13 million during the same period last fiscal, showing an increase of 4.59 per cent. In the suburban and non-suburban sectors, the numbers of passengers booked during the first ten months of the current fiscal were 3,210.93 million and 2,977.85 million, respectively, compared with 3,164.05 million and 2,501.45 million during the same period last year - an increase of 1.48 per cent and 8.16 per cent, respectively, the release noted.
