New Delhi: Reliance Communications (RCom) has announced that its proposed GSM services will be based on the dual platforms of quality and affordability.
The company has a pan-India CDMA network, providing services to around 40 million subscribers. Its GSM services will enable it to garner another 170 million more mobile subscribers, making it possibly one of the largest telecommunications company in the world.
RCom has confirmed that it has received spectrum allocation from the Government, to provide GSM mobile services in 14 new circles, taking the total number of GSM circles to 22, which include the 8 in which it is already operational. RCom claims its network will cover over 97 per cent of the population, in 23,000 towns and 6 lakh villages.
Company sources indicated that as RCom has been offering cheaper tariffs on its CDMA platform for some time now, its GSM services would be well received at tariffs that are substantially lower than prevalent levels.
RCom sources indicate that a tender to procure 100 million GSM lines is in the offing, at a value of over $6 billion.
