RIM launches mobile version of PlayBook tablet
03 Aug 2012
Research In Motion unveiled a mobile version of its PlayBook tablet yesterday, in a bid to improve sales of a product that the market has largely thumbed down. The company will launch its new PlayBook tablet next week in Canada.
RIM will launch the 4G, or fourth-generation, PlayBook in Canada first - on 9 August featuring upgraded tools and performance, including a more integrated inbox, front and rear-facing high definition cameras and high speed connectivity.
Last year, RIM introduced its first PlayBook which was mostly panned by critics.
The original version came without email and other basic functions, and not surprisingly sales failed to take off.
Even as it shipped 260,000 tablets in its most recent fiscal, RIM had to write off nearly half a billion dollars in unsold PlayBook inventory last year.
Against this, Apple Inc sold 17 million iPads in its fiscal third quarter, which ended in June.
