RNRL, RIL move Supreme Court over HC ruling in gas dispute

Close on the heels of Anil Ambani firm Reliance Natural Resources Ltd (RNRL) filing a special leave petition in the Supreme court today, Mukesh Ambani-run Reliance Industries also filed a caveat in the SC requesting that the company be given a chance to explain itself in the case relating to natural gas supply to RNRL.

Anil Ambani group company in its petition sought modification of the Bombay High Court order to make binding the gas supply from Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries.

RNRL moved the SC two days after RIL said it would move the apex court against the Bombay HC order that upheld Anil Ambani group's plea for 28 mmscmd of gas at a rate of $2.34 mmbtu, but asked the two rival groups to arrive at a negotiated agreement.

"After categorically ruling in our favour, court cannot ask us again to sit down with a party which is not willing to sit across," RNRL counsel Mukul Rohatgi said.

The special leave petition challenges the last part of the high court order asking RNRL to "again negotiate" after "ruling in our favour in terms of price of gas, tenure and quantity," he said.

RIL had, earlier, talked of challenging the June 15 ruling of the Bombay high court that RNRL should get gas from RIL at $2.34 per mmbtu, but had asked the two companies to arrive at a negotiated agreement within a month.
