Samsung smartphones to come with two additional safeguards
07 Apr 2014
The latest smartphone from Samsung Electronics will come with two additional safeguards as the company looks to deter rampant theft of the mobile devices, reports quoted the company as saying on Friday.
According to the world's largest mobile-phone maker, users would be able to activate for free its ''Find My Mobile'' and ''Reactivation Lock'', the two anti-theft features that would protect soon-to-be-released Galaxy 5S.
The features would lock the phone in the event of an unauthorised attempt to reset it. The safety features would be incorporated in models sold by wireless carriers Verizon and US Cellular. The phones would be on sale from next week.
''Samsung takes the issue of smartphone theft very seriously, and we are continuing to enhance our security and anti-theft solutions,'' the company said in a statement.
Meanwhile, The Times of India reports that Samsung Mobile CEO JK Shin had said the company would not make a premium version of Galaxy S5, although a top-end Samsung smartphone had been spotted at a benchmarking website. The report said from the leaked specifications, it looked likely to be positioned above the Galaxy S5.
Benchmarking app GFXBench has collected data of an announced Samsung smartphone, model SM-G906S; while the model number of Galaxy S5 is SM-G900, which suggests the two may be part of the same model line.
The upcoming Samsung SM-G906S would come with three features that would give it a more premium positioning as against Galaxy S5 - higher resolution screen, newer processor and more RAM.
According to leaked data, the SM-G906S model would have screen resolution of 2560x1440p (2K resolution), than the 1920x1080p Galaxy S5 display. Rumours had long been rife that Samsung would launch a premium version of its new flagship, featuring 2K resolution and metal body.
