Mumbai: Sapient (NASDAQ: SAPE), a leading business consulting and technology services firm, announced that it will provide extensive technology design, development and support services for British Telecom’s (BT) local service provider contract for London, worth up to £996 million. BT is the prime contractor for the 10-year contract to design, deliver and operate integrated local patient record applications and systems for the entire London care community.

The BT contract is one of several awarded by the UK’s department of health as part of the national programme for IT (NPfIT) for the National Health Service in England. The objective of this programme is to improve patient care and services for the 50 million citizens served by the NHS nationally.

The NPfIT is the world’s largest civilian IT project. It will connect more than 30,000 doctors and 270 acute, community and mental health NHS Trusts in a single, national, secure system. Patient records will become fully electronic and available to NHS staff in any treatment situation 24 hours a day.

Building on its expertise combining business consulting, advanced technology and user-centered design skills, Sapient will deliver a sophisticated healthcare service and portal that will form an integral part of the national patient care record development programme for general practitioners and clinicians.

According to Jerry A. Greenberg, co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of Sapient, “We are proud to be part of this project that will not only revolutionise the delivery of healthcare for all UK citizens but will also raise the bar worldwide for improving healthcare through technology. We have an excellent track record of successfully delivering large-scale IT programmes that achieve the desired business results.”

With this partnership, Sapient is building on its experience helping public sector organisations around the world leverage technology to deliver better citizen service. Sapient has contributed its business and technology expertise to clients including Royal Mail (the UK’s postal service), the U S Marine Corps, the U S Navy, CareFirst, BlueCross, BlueShield and the University of Chicago Hospitals. Sapient designed and delivered UK Online for the UK government, which offers UK citizens online access to a vast range of government information and services.
