Mumbai: IT major Satyam Computer Services Ltd will set up a centre of excellence (COE) in Japan, code-named KANZEN, to strengthen its presence there.

Satyam CTO Kiichiro Ohya made the announcement on the sidelines of the inauguration of an offshore development centre for Japan's Inoac Corporation.

Satyam is increasing its focus on Japan by training Japanese engineering graduates in India, building a bilingual talent pool in India and China and setting up delivery centres at China, India (Pune) and Fu Kouka (Japan).

"This initiative is an innovation to traditional models of delivering offshore value to Japan from India. While some of the large Indian companies who have a focus on Japan have bee n working towards higher investments to increase focus on Japan, that alone might not be the solution to the problem, as India has an acute shortage of bilingual engineers," Harsh Vardhan, head (north Asia) of Satyam Computer Services Ltd, said it in a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

While some of the Indian companies focussed on Japan have been working towards higher investments in the country, India faces the problem of an acute shortage of bilingual engineers.

Satyam has over 100 engineers operating in Japan over the last three months. The team would work in programme managing deliveries out of China, Japan and India. Besides, Satyam has been successfully sourcing Japanese bilingual manpower from Vietnam.
