13 Oct 2012
The State Bank of India (SBI) and its associate banks propose to acquire 50,000 point-of-sale (PoS) machines for deployment over the next 18 months as part of their technology upgradation programme.
An infrastructure using upgraded technology will help the banks improve the speed of customer handling at its branches as well as merchant locations, SBI said.
The SBI group has about 28,000 ATS at present and this will go up to 78,000 by the addition of 50,000 new POS machines.
SBI has over 14,100 branches while its five associate banks have over 4,500 branches.
The SBI group uses a single window operator counter called `Green Channel' and this window allows withdrawal or deposit of amounts up to Rs40,000.
Besides enlarging the number of counters though deployment of additional terminals, the SBI group plans to include transactions including bill payment, bus / train / air ticketing, gold coin sale, mobile top-up, merchant acquiring business activity, etc in its POS services.
