Share of top 100 centres in bank credit down marginally in January-March 2010

Top hundred banking centres provided 78 per cent of the total bank credit in the country while top 100 centres arranged according to the size of deposits had 69.4 per cent share of total bank deposits in the country as of 31 March 2010.
The corresponding share of top hundred centres in gross bank credit and aggregate deposits was 78.5 per cent and 69.2 per cent, respectively, as of March 2009.
Aggregate deposits of top hundred centres increased by 17.2 per cent in March 2010 year-on-year compared to a growth of 21.0 per cent recorded a year ago. Gross bank credit of top hundred centres grew 16.3 per cent as of March 2010, which was substantially lower than the 20.5 per cent growth recorded in March 2009, quarterly figures provided by the Reserve Bank of India showed.
The top 200 centres, covering 32.1 per cent of reporting offices, had 74.4 per cent of aggregate deposits while top 200 centres covering 31.7 per cent of reporting offices accounted for 81.5 per cent of gross bank credit.
Group-wise, nationalised banks accounted for 51.9 per cent of the aggregate deposits, while State Bank of India and its associates accounted for 22.5 per cent.
The share of other scheduled commercial banks, foreign banks and regional rural banks in aggregate deposits was 17.5 per cent, 5.0 per cent and 3.1 per cent, respectively.
