Strike at Suzuki units ends; car production to resume

Workers at three Suzuki units in the Gurgaon-Manesar automotive belt - Suzuki Powertrain India, Suzuki Castings, and Suzuki Motorcycle India - today called off their two-day strike in support of the workers at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar car plant.
"We have reached an agreement with the management and they have agreed to consider our demands sympathetically," Suzuki Powertrain India Employees Union president Sube Singh Yadav said. Workers from Suzuki Castings - a part of Suzuki Powertrain - are also affiliated to the Suzuki Powertrain union.
Similarly, Suzuki Motorcycle India Workers Union president Anil Kumar said workers at the two-wheeler maker's plant resumed duty this morning after an agreement was reached with the management.
Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki said today that it would resume production at its two car units in Gurgaon and Manesar over the weekend. While the Manesar plant, where the worker unrest has its roots, will restart on Sunday, while production at Gurgaon will resume on Monday as Sunday is a regular holiday.
The management had announced the closure of both plants on Thursday in view of the spreading worker unrest.
However, the Maruti spokesman did not specify whether the dispute with the workers, particularly severe at Manesar, had come nearer to resolution.
