New Delhi: Tata Teleservices today said that it will deploy commercially a new location-based service in the Indian market. The service will leverage Qualcomm's QPoint solution and gpsOne chipset technology.

The company said with Qualcomm and TeleCommunication Systems' technology and services, Tata Indicom customers will benefit from a greatly improved location-based services experience on their handsets.

A-GPS technology will provide Tata Indicom with a differentiated location-based service, which is different from previously deployed cellular location-based services in India in terms of both performance and reliability. Tata Indicom's A-GPS service will leverage triangulation with cellular base stations and satellite-based GPS for precise position location in both rural and urban environments, including inside buildings and structures.

"At Tata Teleservices, our constant endeavor is to provide our customers with advanced, rich wireless services and this manifests itself, with deployment of location-based service," said said Pankaj Sethi, president, value added services, Tata Teleservices Limited. "Another first for Tata Indicom, LBS will provide advanced and reliable wireless navigation technologies for enriched services.''

Sethi also said the telecom service provider plans to work with the local developer community to create both consumer and enterprise location-based service applications. Consumer navigation will include friend finder and social networking applications, while enterprise customers will benefit from asset and fleet tracking applications.

Arvin Chander, vice president of global carrier relations for Qualcomm Internet Services, said, "Tata is working with a strong community of content providers who understand the market and have the tools to create a range of precision LBS applications."

For Tata Indicom, TeleCommunication Systems will be hosting its Xypoint Location Platform that includes a Position Determination Entity built upon the QPoint technology from Qualcomm.
