08 Jul 2009
Toshiba Corporation has announced that Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator (Toshiba JSW), a joint venture with the JSW group, will manufacture and market steam turbines and generators in India. It has signed an MoU with the government of Tamil Nadu for the same.
The MoU allows Toshiba JSW to lease land for the construction of manufacturing facilities on a site in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The venture will see investments of some $160 million in plant and manufacturing equipment over five years from fiscal year 2009.
Established in September last year, Toshiba JSW will manufacture and market mid- to large-sized steam turbines and generators, ranging in size from 500MW to 1,000MW, for highly efficient super-critical thermal power plants in India.
JSW Energy plans to set up a 3,200MW super-critical thermal power plant with an investment of Rs15,000 crore at Ratnagiri in Maharashtra.
Toshiba holds 75 per cent stake in the joint venture, with JSW Energy holding 20 per cent and JSW Steel the rest.
Located about 18km north of downtown Chennai, the major gateway to south-east India, the site has a ground area of some 400,000 square meters. Facility construction is scheduled to start in this month, and manufacturing is expected to start in January 2011.
