Toshiba to supply 660 MW steam turbines to NTPC joint venture

Japan's Toshiba Corporation today said that it would supply two units of 660 MW supercritical steam turbine and generator island to Meja Urja Nigam Pvt. Ltd, a joint venture between NTPC and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utapatdan Nigam Ltd (UPRVUNL).
This Rs1675-contract follows the award of a contract in February this year for supplying three 800 MW supercritical staeam turbines and generators for the first stage of Kudgi Super Thermal Power Project.
The equipment will be installed in Meja thermal power plant in Uttar Pradesh and commercial operation of the first unit is scheduled within 48 months from the contract award followed by the the second unit within 54 months.
The scope of the contract covers engineering, procurement, manufacturing, installation and testing of the steam turbine generator island.
Toshiba said its Keihin product operations in Japan along with Toshiba JSW in Chennai would manufacture the steam turbine and generator in order to comply with the stipulation to set up a local manufacturing facility under a phased manufacturing programme with technology transfer. Toshiba JSW, 75 per cent owned by the Japanese parent, is Toshiba's first turbine and generator manufacturing facility outside Japan.
The company said it had positioned the thermal power equipment business as part of a comprehensive power generation portfolio alongside nuclear power and hydro power, and is targetting $1 billion in sales in the FY 2015 for its thermal power business in India.
In addition to India, Toshiba said Toshiba JSW would also be used to manufacture turbines and generators in markets around the world, particularly Asia and the Middle East, where demand for thermal power plants is strong.
