Unitech bags 4.4 MHz of spectrum in Karnataka, appoints CEO for telecom business
02 Jun 2008
Mumbai: Real etstate developer Unitech has been allotted 4.4 MHz of spectrum in 1800 MHz GSM band in Karnataka.
With this allotment, Unitech has spectrum in five of the 22 circles. A while ago, Unitech was also allotted spectrum for the Andhra Pradesh and Kerala circles. In February 2008, the company was allotted Unified Access Services Licences for all 22 telecom circles across India.
With the allotment of spectrum to new players, existing operators are now starting to see the beginning of people movements across levels of their organisations, as a prelude to direct market competition.
Unitech has announced the appointment of former Aircel chief executive officer Rohit Chandra as its chief executive officer for its telecom business. Also on board is Tata Teleservices' Ashok Sud, who will be President of corporate affairs.
In his capacity as CEO of Unitech's foray into the telecom business, Chandra will be look after setting up and operating Unitech's pan-India mobile services, in addition to providing strategic direction and operational focus to its fledgling enterprise.
Prior to Aircel, Chandra has been associated with companies Philips, Forbes & Campbell, Wandel & Goltermann and Ericsson. He moved to Aircel in 2004 as CEO for its North and East regions, and was subsequently promoted as executive director
