Volkswagen AG, Europe's largest carmaker is recalling 15,902 of its 2009 Routan model minivans to address a potential wiring problem that could lead to a fire.

The German automaker said that it has notified the recall to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The Wolfsburg, Germany-based VW said that there is a possibility of the lower sliding door hinge bracket making contact with some internal wiring installation that may lead to a fire within the rear sliding door.

The automaker noted that there have been no incidents of injuries or accidents related to the problem.

"Volkswagen is recalling certain model year 2009 Routan vehicles manufactured from June 2008 through July 2009" with a sliding door assembly that can wear through wire insulation at the door hinge,'' the NHTSA said in a statement

"This could result in an overheated latch and a fire within the rear sliding door could occur," the statement added.

The recalled Routan minivans were assembled in the US at Chrysler's Windsor, Ontario plant.

Last week, Chrysler recalled nearly 35,000 Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass vehicles to fix sticking gas pedals, a similar problem that forced Japanese carmaker Toyota to recall more than 2 million vehicles earlier this year. (See: Chrysler recalls 35,000 vehicles to fix sticking gas pedal problem)
