Wipro to target retail for lighting and IT sector for furniture

Chennai: The multi-product Wipro Limited, which has a presence in IT services, soaps, lighting products, office furnitures, is looking at the booming retail sector for its lighting business. The company has launched a new range of architectural lighting products for the purpose.
The Rs106.26 billion revenue company earns around Rs600 crore out of its consumer care the lighting business.
According to Rajesh Kochhar, chief executive, commercial and institutional business, lighting is an important aspect to provide good shopping experience to shoppers. The company has launched advanced lighting control systems, LED based fixtures and other brightness management products for the retail sector.
He said Wipro Lighting is strong in sectors like pharmaceuticals, retail, IT and others. The others in this space are Bajaj Electricals, Philips and Crompton. With good demand the company is adding a lighting production line at its Baddi factory in Himachal Pradesh. The factory currently makes soaps. "The other two places where lighting products are made are Waluj, near Aurangabad in Maharashtra and Mysore, Karnataka," he said.
According to him, the customer patronage of sensor based lighting control products is a tad slow as the initial investment is slightly on the higher side. "The investment could be recouped through savings in power cost in two years time."
Wipro will be targetting the IT sector for its Yuva range of furniture - chairs and work stations/tables.
