HRD ministry approves 3 more IT institutes under PPP mode
02 Jul 2012
The centre has sanctioned three new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIIT), taking the number of such institutions sanctioned under the public private partnership (PPP) mode to 17.
The ministry of human resources today announced the grant of approval to proposals of Assam, Tripura and Rajasthan for setting of IIITs in the PPP mode.
These IIITs would initially be registered as societies under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, and subsequently brought under the umbrella of a central legislation, an official release said today.
Already, 17 state governments have identified land for setting up these institutions and 11 of them are in the process of identifying industry partners.
It is expected that three more IIITs will be sanctioned for another three states under the scheme shortly, taking the total to 20.
IIITs are expected to address the challenges faced by the Indian IT industry and growth of the domestic IT market and the HRD ministry intends to establish 20 such institutes on a not-for-profit public-private partnership (N-PPP) mode.
