IIT Kharagpur has indigenously developed an efficient, affordable and certified brushless DC (BLDC) motor and smart controller for e-rickshaws, which has now been transferred to Brushless Motor India Pvt Ltd for commercial production.
This technology has been developed under ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY)’s programme for indigenous development of electric vehicle sub-systems.
This technology transfer was part of Digital India Week, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 4 July 2022 at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
At present, the country imports more than 90 per cent of the components and its technology for electric vehicles, like motor/controller/ converter/battery management system/charger etc. These components, however, are unsuitable to our environment, road and traffic conditions. Therefore, to address this challenge and to increase the local manufacturing, MeitY has initiated a programme for indigenous development of electric vehicle sub-systems.
Initially, technology development for 2W/3W has been taken up as it contributes to more than 80 per cent of the vehicles on our roads.
