The effort to put an end to the pesky calls and SMSes, which missed almost four deadlines, is slated to be implemented from 27 September.

From the last week of September, mobile phone and landline users registered with the National Customer Preference Registry, an upgraded version of Do Not Call Registry - will be not get tele-makerting calls or text messages, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the country's telecom licensor, was in the process of unveiling a dedicated landline number that would help in identifying telemarketing calls.

"DoT has provided the '140' number series to be allocated to telemarketers. Access providers have to make the relevant provisions in their network before allocation of resources to telemarketers using the '140' numbering series from both mobile and fixedline networks," TRAI said.

The regulator had announced the new rules last year under which telemarketers, who call customers registered with National Do Not Call (NDNC) registry , would face fines of Rs 75,000 for the first violation.

They would face fine of up to Rs2.5 lakh for the sixth offence, and would be blacklisted for two years.

India has about 886 million mobile subsribers as on 30 June 2011, with an overall tele-density (number of telephone connections per 100 people) of 73.97.
