Work on Rs1,000-crore Chennai desalination plant begins

IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects Ltd, India today announced the start of work for the Rs1,000-crore sea water desalination plant in Chennai.

The centrally-funded project, coming up at Nemmeli near Chennai, is expected to be a key drinking water source for Chennai.

The project, when completed, will have a capacity to desalinate around 100 million litres of water per day.

BEFESA Agua of Spain is the technology partner for IVRCL Infrastructures in the desalination project.

IVRCL Infrastructures is one of the strongest players in water infrastructure in India while BEFESA Agua is a dominant force in desalination with a presence in more than 70 countries

The centre released has released a little more than Rs1,000 crore in two installments, based on the state's detailed project report, prepared by Mecon Ltd and Swiss-based Adecco Technologies.
