Railways' April-December freight revenue rises 7.73 per cent to over Rs67,880 crore

Indian Railways has reported an estimated 7.73 per cent rise in revenue from freight traffic at Rs67,880.82 crore during April-December 2010, against Rs63,009.23 crore during the same period last year.
Total earnings of the Railways from goods traffic (on an originating basis) have gone up 6.51 per cent to Rs45,290.35 crore during April-December 2010, from Rs42,522.43 crore during April-December 2009.
Total revenue from passenger traffic during the first nine months of the financial year 2010-11 were up 9.76 per cent at Rs19,205.26 crore against Rs17,496.89 crore during the same period last year.
Revenue from other coaching increased by 10.94 per cent to Rs1,889.81 crore during April-December 2010 from Rs1,703.45 crore during the same period last year.
The number of passengers during April-December 2010 was 6 per cent higher at 5,901.56 million against 5,567.66 million during the same period last year.
This included 3026.84 million (up 5.34 per cent) passengers using the suburban trains and 2,874.72 million (up6.69 per cent) passengers using the non-suburban section against the previous year's 2,873.28 million (suburban) and 2,694.38 million (non-suburban).
