Intel faces anti-trust probe in New York
11 Jan 2008
The world's largest computer chipmaker, Intel Corp, is under investigations by the New York attorney general's office for probable violation of anti-trust laws by allegedly preventing customers from dealing AMD, its main rival.
The attorney general's office has issued a subpoena to Intel asking it to produce documents regarding its pricing strategy.
The chipmaker faces charges of compensating those who were exclusive customers of Intel while penalising those who also bought chips from others. The attorney general is also investigating whether Intel had illegally cut off competitors from distribution channels.
The attorney general said that the investigation was to determine whether the chipmaker had improperly used monopoly power to exclude competitors or stifle competition.
