Fortune ranks Apple as the most admired global company

Apple Computer, the maker of iPhone, iPod and Mac PCs, has been ranked at the top among 20 most admired global companies, according to a survey by Fortune magazine, famous for its Fortune 100 and 500 lists of US and global corporations.

General Electric, the diversified industrial conglomerate, follows Apple in second position, while Japanese automaker Toyota occupies the third place.

Beverages major PepsiCo, led by India-born Indra Nooyi has been placed at 13th position, higher than archrival Coca-Cola at 19th spot, according to the list.

Berkshire Hathaway, the holding company of legendary investor Warren Buffett, has been ranked at the fourth position.

Others companies to make the list include, courier firm FedEx at sixth, Johnson & Johnson at seventh, luxury car maker BMW (9) and software giant Microsoft at 10th position
Aircraft maker Boeing was placed at 16th position, the world's largest retailer Wal-Mart at 17th and Japanese automaker Honda Motor at 18th.

Fortune said that it partnered with global management consulting firm Hay Group for the survey, which involved over 600 companies in 65 industries. Over 3,500 businesspeople voted to select the top 20 companies they admired the most, from any industry.The companies were ranked on the basis of eight attributes such as innovation, people management, use of corporate assets, social responsibility, quality of management, financial soundness, long-term investment and quality of products/services.

In a seperate list released comprising Fortune's list of America's most admired companies, Apple is again at the top, followed by Berkshire and GE at second and third place respectively.

 Adobe Systems, a software company led by Indian American Shantanu Narayen, made it to the list of the 317 companies featured.
