Apple is reportedly testing a device which is said to be a smart watch with features of a smartphone.

The aim behind the exercise is to expand its products profile beyond smartphones and tablets and according to The Wall Street Journal the company was in discussions on this with Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturing co partner Hon Hai Precision Industry, which owns the world's largest electronics manufacturing cpmmplex in China, also operates under its trading name Foxconn.

According to reports Apple could rope in Foxconn, and provide it the technology for the project.

The device operating on the same platform as the iPhone would be made with curved glass, the New York Times reported separately yesterday.

The article, which cited unnamed sources "familiar with the company's explorations" said the watch-like product that could be used to make mobile payments was currently in the experimental stage and would operate on Apple's iOS platform, which was the foundation of its iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch consumer devices.

Citing one person briefed on the effort, The Wall Street Journal  said Foxconn had been working on some technologies that could be used in wearable devices.

The Taiwan-based company had been working towards making more power-efficient displays with its technologies aimed at multiple Foxconn customers, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing the same person.
