Apple to offer cheaper variant of MacBook Air later this year: report

Apple plans to offer a cheaper variant of its popular MacBook Air, according to a new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via 9to5Mac). Kuo is known to make accurate predictions about Apple products.

This cheaper variant of MacBook Air could hit the market in the second quarter of 2018.

According to Kuo, a new variant of the MacBook Air could arrive 'with a lower price tag', a move that could boost MacBook shipments up by 10-15 per cent this year. A MacBook Air upgrade has been a  long time coming, unlike the MacBook Pro, though in 2017, Apple improved the Graphics and processor clock speed.

Details of the upgrade are few at this point, but the report from the KGI Securities analyst corroborates a similar report from DigiTimes. Apple currently sells the 13-inch MacBook Air for $999 (or approx Rs65,131), with the base model featuring an older 1.8GHz dual-core Intel i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, and Intel HD Graphics 6000. Unlike the MacBook Pro, the MacBook Air does not feature a Retina Display.

Though there is some talk about Apple discontinuing MacBook Air, there is still a market for it. Not only is the MacBook Air the most popular macOS machine in the market, it is also a popular choice among college students.
