Ashok Leyland ships 200 trucks to Iraq

Chennai: Commercial vehicles major, Ashok Leyland, has despatched the first shipment of 200 cargo trucks, out of the order for 3,322 trucks it had bagged earlier, to Iraq. The series 912 Leyland trucks are being carried by MV Rose which sailed from Mumbai port on February 7, 2004.
The order for the 3,322 trucks, valued at $ 46 million, is under the United Nations Oil for Food Programme, which was restructured following the war in Iraq. The order involves the supply of 1,661 trucks each to the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Transport, Government of Iraq.
The trucks will be supported by a comprehensive after-sales package, including supply of spare parts and training in maintenance and overhaul — aided by the company's customer service support hub in Dubai and its network of dealers in the Gulf region.
Under a separate contract, 500 Ashok Leyland minibuses, assembled in Egypt, are also being supplied to the Ministry of Transport, Iraq.
Another breakthrough achieved by the company in 2002-03 was the supply of 75 buses to Afghanistan. A fresh order for 46 buses in under execution.
