BSNL is top cellular provider in Kerala with 2.64 lakh connections

Kochi: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), which launched its mobile services seven months ago, has emerged as the No 1 cellular service provider in Kerala with 2.64 lakh connections.
BSNL chief general manager (Kerala circle) S L Winston says as per the statistics of the Cellular Operators'' Association of India, BSNL, as on 31 May 2003, had a customer base of 2.54 lakh, followed by Escotel (2.40 lakh), BPL (1.49 lakh) and Airtel (62,000).
He says at present full coverage is provided in 128 cities and incidental coverage in 47 cities. "The coverage will be increased further by adding about 100 more base stations. The work has already been started and is expected to be over in three months."
Winston says BSNL has introduced a special scheme for postpaid mobile connections in Kerala. "Those landline customers who take a new postpaid connection next month will get another CellOne connection free at the same address."
