British Telecom has applied to the department of telecommunications, for license to provide national and international long distance telecom services through its recently formed joint venture, BT Telecom India Pvt. Ltd.

BT says the license would enable the company to offer domestic and international managed services for the first time to multi site corporate customers who have sites in India, with virtual private network-based (VPN) using ATM and internet protocol-based multi-protocol label switching.

BT, which has had operations in India for two decades, also employs 12,000 hands, plans to hire another 6,000 over the next two years to expand its operations.

The British Telco has announced a joint venture with a 74 per cent majority holding with Jubilant Enpro Pvt. Ltd., a New Delhi-based company engaged in the businesses of oil and gas, food and services.

India is one of the world's fastest growing, though fragmented telecom markets, and BT's projections indicate that its Indian business could generate sales of $250 million by 2009.
