Ford announces recall of 65,000 Fusion midsize cars
19 Nov 2014
Ford has announced a recall of 65,000 Fusion midsize cars in North America as it was possible to remove the ignition keys if the transmission was not in park, due to a software problem.
The recall includes Fusions, including gas-electric hybrids, from the 2014 and 2015 model years.
The company said it was able to trace the problem to a computer programme in the instrument cluster. It was possible for the keys to be removed in 30 minutes after the ignition switch was turned off if the cars were left in gear, which violated US safety regulations and raised the risk of cars rolling away unexpectedly.
According to Ford, it was not aware of any crashes or injuries from the problem. The instrument cluster would be reprogrammed by dealers at no cost to owners.
The recall involves around 55,000 vehicles in the US, with the rest in Canada and Mexico.
Meanwhile, carcomplaints.com reports that Ford had named the vehicles for recall as:
- 2014-2015 Ford Fusion - built at the Flat Rock assembly plant, 4 September, 2013 to 31 October, 2014
- 2014-2015 Ford Fusion - built at the Hermosillo assembly plant, 27 July, 2013 to 31 October, 2014
- 2015 Ford Fusion Energi - built at the Hermosillo assembly plant, 14 July, 2014 to 31 October, 2014
- 2015 Ford Fusion Hybrid - built at the Hermosillo assembly plant, 24 February, 2014 to 31 October, 2014
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration had not released a schedule of when the recall would begin, and neither had Ford.
