21 Jan 2014
Wikipedia, the free online encyclopaedia, has seen a decline of 10 per cent in its page-views in 2013, according to The Times of India.
The report said numbers on the Wikimedia foundation website, show page-views of English Wikipedia fell 12 per cent from December 2012 to December 2013. In December 2012, page views were at 9.70 billion as against December 2013 when they were down to 8.53 billion declining nearly 13 per cent.
As for Wikipedia as a whole, the numbers also showed a decline by nearly 2 billion page views. In December 2012, the page views for Wikipedia overall were 20.17 billion and by December 2013 it was down to 18.32 billion, declining nearly 10 per cent.
According the report, the falling page views could be attributed to Google's Knowledge Graph, which appeared as a box on the side.
The report quoted, Clay Shirky, associate professor at New York University and fellow at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Security as saying if one could get ones' question answered from the search page, one did not need to click (any further).
