Honda Motor to recall thousands of cars over faulty seat belts
14 Oct 2014
Honda Motor Co said yesterday it was recalling 43,000 Acura luxury models in the US to fix faulty seat belts, Reuters reported.
The company said front seat belts might not release from the retracted position in very low temperatures below 0 degrees Fahrenheit (-17.7 Celsius).
The company added the affected models included the 2014 Acura RLX sedan and 2014-2015 Acura MDX crossover, the company said.
Honda added it had no reports of accidents or injuries related to the issue.
It was not a matter of getting stuck in one's seat with the seat belt attached, USA Today reported.
Rather, the glitch was that in sub-zero weather the seat belt might not extend from the retracted position for the driver and front-seat passenger. The worry was that people might try to drive without wearing a seat belt, Honda spokesman Chris Martin said.
He added the problem had been discovered outsider the US and had not become an issue in the US yet.
The recall applied to 7,000 2014 Acura RLX sedans and 36,000 2014 and 2015 MDX SUVs of which the seat belts would be replaced.
