Hyderabad: Jet Airways is set to become the first Indian private sector airline to operate between India and the US from this summer.
The airline has been given official permission to operate a three-times-a-week service on the India-Brussels-New York sector.
While there is a cap of three flights a week on the India-US sector, Brussels and the US follow an open-sky policy, which allows airlines to operate as many flights as they desire between the two countries. Globally, the summer schedule of airlines runs from March-end to October-end.
Air Sahara, the only other private sector airline allowed to operate in the international skies, had not applied for permission to operate to the US during the forthcoming summer.
Air India is the only airline from India operating regular flights on the India-US route. It has regular services to four destinations in the US - New York, Newark, Chicago and Los Angeles. In addition, at least two US airlines, including North West and Delta, operate regular flights between the two countries.
