Mahanagar Telephone Services Ltd the government-run telecom operator which provides telephony services in Mumbai and Delhi, on Monday announced that it would launch 3G (third generation) services in Mumbai in March. It has already launched 3G services – which it calls 'Jadoo' (magic) - in parts of Delhi.

MTNL said it expects to extend the service to the rest of Delhi in next three months. "We will begin aggressive marketing our 3G services when we have a good user base and cover major parts of Delhi," MTNL director (technical) Kuldeep Singh said on the sidelines of Managed Services India 2009 conference in Delhi. The government-run company currently has about 500 subscribers in its 3G network in Delhi.

MTNL aims to spend Rs1724 crore in the current financial year to expand its mobile services business in India and to increase its broadband capacity, Singh added. The company posted a net profit of Rs507 crore on revenue of Rs4729 crore for the fiscal year that ended 31 March 2008.
