Mercedes-Benz India begins construction of bus body building facility at Chakan plant
27 Sep 2010
Mercedes-Benz today began construction of a new facility for the body building of its city buses housed within the existing Chakan plant in Pune.
The foundation stone of the new facility was laid by Wilfried Aulbur, managing director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India along with Piyush Arora, director, technical, Mercedes-Benz India and Srinivas Chilukuri, general manager, bus sales and Marketing, Mercedes-Benz India.
The building of the new facility comes within a short time-span of the car maker announcing its foray into the city bus segment back in June 2010.
The new assembly line will cater to the production requirements of the city buses to start with, which is expected to start around the second half of 2011.
Mercedes-Benz, the inventor of the first bus in the world, started collaboration with India for trucks back in 1954.
It had introduced its two-axle luxury coaches in the last quarter of 2008 and the multi-axle coaches at the auto expo in 2010 in the Indian market, which are used by private and government transport organisations in the country.
