SC to hear Mercedes plea for 1% cess in lieu of diesel ban

Carmaker Mercedes-Benz India Pvt Ltd on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking lifting of the diesel-powered vehicles of over 2,000cc engine capacity, saying it is ready to pay 1 per cent environment cess on the sale of such cars. The apex court will hear the matter on Friday.
The move from the German car maker is the latest in attempts by carmakers to get the ban on registration of cars with engines bigger than 2000cc lifted.
Earlier, Mercedes had said that it would launch petrol versions of all its models sold in India by September this year. The ban on registration of over 2,000cc diesel cars in Delhi/NCR was imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in an attempt to reduce air pollution.
Chief Justice T S Thakur said the company's plea will be considered on 12 August.
The ban has impacted auto makers like Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, Tata Motors Ltd and Mercedes-Benz, who approached the apex court to lift the ban.
The court on 4 July reserved its order on the issue of modifying its order to allow registrations of these vehicles.
