07 Apr 2010
The joint venture of state-run power producers Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd (NTPC) is planning to set up two 700 MW nuclear power plants at sites identified by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE).
Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the India Energy Congress in New Delhi today, Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) secretary Srikumar Banerjee said one of the sites identified by the DAE for its 2x700 MW plant would go to the NPCIL-NTPC joint venture company.
The two power majors had, in February last year, entered into an agreement to float a joint venture company for setting up nuclear power plants.
Banerjee also spoke at length on the importance of nuclear power in a growing economy in the context of the climate change-induced energy scenario.
Officials said the identified sites in Madhya Pradesh and Haryana could be allocated to the NPCIL-NTPC joint venture.
Under the agreement, the joint venture would have shareholding of 51:49 between NPCIL and NTPC.
