NTPC to create 14,000 MW fresh capacity by 2016-17

National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) will add 14,000 MW to its current generating capacity of 42,500 MW, to take is total capacity to 55,500 MW by the end of the 12th Plan, ie, 2016-17.

NTPC, which has emerged as a dominant power producer in the country, accounting for more than 27 per cent of the total power produced, has added 10,000 MW generating capacity over the last three years.

The installed capacity of the company is 18.44 per cent of the country's total generating capacity.

NTPC is aiming at an installed generating capacity of 1,28,000 MW in the coming years, chairman and managing director of the power utility Arup Roychowdhury said during a press conference in Delhi today.

NTPC, he said, recorded a 4.49 per cent growth in power generation so far during this fiscal year in comparison to the last fiscal, adding that power production at NTPC-run power plants has gone up from 222.068 billion units to 232.028 billion units.

Power production at NTPC's coal stations reached 212.39 units this fiscal, increasing by around 6.67 per cent from 199.054 units in the last fiscal.

NTPC also scored over other power producers in plant load factor, with an average PLF of 87.63 per cent at the coal station run by it, against the national average of 69.93 per cent.

State-run NTPC's Rs1,750-crore bond issue will open on Tuesday, its first bond issue after a gap of over 20 years.

The money raised through the bonds will be utilised for funding capital expenditure and meeting the debt requirements of ongoing projects, the company said.
