NTPC's Simhadri plant awarded IPMA's international project management award

The public sector National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd, India's largest thermal power generating company, has been awarded the 'IPMA international project management award 2005' for its Simhadri Thermal Power project. The award, instituted by International Project Management Association (IPMA) is given for excellence in project management for achieving high performance.
NTPC's core business is engineering, construction and operation of power generating plants and also providing consultancy to power utilities in India and abroad.
According to the London-based Datamonitor (based on 1998 data) NTPC is the world's sixth largest (in terms of thermal power generation) and has the second most efficient capacity utilisation amongst all thermal utilities in the world. It was incorporated in the year 1975 to accelerate power development in the country.
As on March 31, 2005, with one-fifth (20.4 per cent) of the total installed capacity in the country NTPC accounted for 27.1 per cent of the total power generation in the country during 2004-05.
The total installed capacity of NTPC is 23,749mw, of which its 13 coal-based plants account for 19,480mw and seven gas-based plants add another 3,955mw. The remaining 314mw is generated by its three JV projects. In addition, SAIL Power Supply Corporation Ltd, in which NTPC owns 50 per cent equity, operates the 120mw captive Durgapur power plant 120mw Rourkela plant and the 74mw Bhilai plant. NTPC also manages the government-owned 750mw Badarpur thermal power station.
The Simhadri project, located in Vishakhapatnam district of Andhra Pradesh, is a coal-based power plant with an installed capacity of 1,000mw in 2x500mw configuration.
