Forbes Lists ONGC No 1 Indian firm

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has topped in the list of 34 Indian firms in the Forbes list of 2000 corporate giants across the world. The ranking is based on sales, profits, assets and stock market value.

At the top of the Indian list is ONGC, ranked 239 in the overall global ranking, is followed by Reliance Industries with an overall global ranking 258, State Bank of India, which is globally at 326 and Indian Oil, with an overall global ranking 399.

In the ranking for Indian firms there are five oil and gas companies, four software giants, three each dealing in materials and capital goods, two utilities, and one food, consumer durable and telecommunications major.

In the IT segment Tata Consultancy is ranked 1,047 following Infosys Technologies (1,130), Wipro (1,233) and Satyam Computer Services (1,874).

Bajaj Auto is the only Consumer Durables company ranked 1916 and Bharti Airtel is the only Indian telecommunications company ranked 1,149 among 2000 giants

Citigroup has been ranked number 1 in Forbes 2000 followed by Bank of America, HSBC Holdings, General Electric, JP Morgan Chase, American Intl Group, ExxonMobil (all American), Royal Dutch Shell (Netherlands), UBS (Switzerland) and ING Group (Netherlands).

The 2007 rankings indicate that globalisation is the essential element for business to prosper. Forbes says this year''s comprehensive list of global superstars values the world''s largest public companies including the hottest companies and best performers across 27 industries.
