The third generation (3G) CDMA services will have a bigger customer base in India, exceeding 200 million in the next three to four years, global communication technology major Qualcomm's chairman and chief executive Paul Jacobs said.
"The 3G auction will lead to further CDMA growth. We expect 200 million subscribers of the projected 400 million subscribers to join the Indian networks over the next three-four years to be on 3G CDMA technology," Jacobs said.
"3G has been a success worldwide. It is expected to be a success in India also as people are going to use more data," he said at a conference organised by the company in New Delhi yesterday.
He termed the Indian telecom market as 'exciting', adding that India provides a unique opportunity on mobile broadband service as it is a nascent market and the wireless subscribers are growing rapidly
By 2010, over 60 per cent of all broadband subscribers will be in the mobile segment, Jacobs said.
Later on, in an interview with CNBC-TV18 Jacobs said with the 3G auctions ahead the company sees even more CDMA technology.
