Renault Kwid logs 25,000 bookings in two weeks of release
07 Oct 2015
Booking for Renault Kwid, the small car from French auto maker Renault, has crosed 25,000 bookings within two weeks of its release, and seems poised to give a tough fight to the Maruti Alto in the entry level segment.
The Economic Times reported that the Kwid, the small car with SUV traits, had managed to gain traction with all sections of the society with around 35 per cent of the bookings from tier II and tier III cities such as Rajkot, Nagpur, Nashik, Jalandhar and Ludhiana.
The Renualt Kwid, which has been launched in four variants - Standard, RxE, RxL and RxT - packs the segment's first ever touchscreen Media-Nav Navigation System, digital instrument console, chrome touched tail lights and side body cladding.
The Kwid is powered by a 799cc 3-cylinder petrol engine, delivers 54PS and a peak torque of 72Nm with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
The car is also a leader in terms of fuel efficiency with the best-in-class mileage at 25.17kmpl. The Kwid boast the highest ground clearance of 180 mm in the class and has a boot capacity of 300 litres.
The Kwid, which measures 3679mm in length, 1579mm in height and 1471mm in width, has a wheelbase of 2422mm.
The Renault Kwid has been priced aggressively at Rs 2.57 lakh.
Commentators say the new vehicle can be expected to revive sales in the segment and revive interest in the once extremely lucrative segment.
For years the segment was the bread and butter for some car majors, especially Maruti Suzuki.
However, they also caution that the era of small, mini cars with engine capacities of upto 800 cc seems to be over and Renault Kwid might find the going difficult as the trend shifted towards other segments.
Wider choice and availability of bank financing seemed to have fired consumer fancy towards compact hatchbacks or sedans. The era of the mini car, heralded with the iconic 800 from Maruti seems to be over.
Renault Kwid is expected at the company's dealers from today and delivery of the model is expected to commence next week.
Last month, Renault India started taking pre-launch bookings for the Kwid. (See: Renault opens bookings for new hatchback 'Kwid).
