Tata Motors has launched the armoured Range Rover and Discovery SUV's in India and soon plans to launch the armoured version of Jaguar XJ Sentinel, a fully armoured luxury vehicle.
The vehicles are made by Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover, the iconic British luxury car maker
"The armoured vehicles market is a very niche segment and we don't want to leave it out. We are launching these vehicles in India so that we have the complete range of offerings here," said Rohit Suri, head of Tata Motors' Premier Car Division.
The armoured range of its Range Rover SUVis priced at Rs4.74 crore, and the Discovery at Rs3.75 crore. The steep price of the armoured version pales in comparison to the price of normal Range Rover, which costs Rs1.06 crore and Rs63 lakh for the Discovery.
Tata Motors is also planning to launch the Rs5.5-crore Jaguar XJ Sentinel, which was unveiled by JLR at the 2010 Moscow motor show in Moscow in August 2010. (See: Tata Motors unveils anti-assasin Jagaur, XJ Sentinel)
Tata Motors is aiming to sell these armoured vehicles to the super rich in countries like India, Russia, China, Middle East and Europe.
The global market for armoured is around 15,000 units annually but in India as well as in Russia it is at a very nascent stage. Despite the global recession, JLR sold 242 of its armoured vehicles last year.
