Close on the heels of the production cut at its passenger vehicle unit in Pune, Tata Motors today announced a planned reduction in commercial vehicle production as well, in a sign that growth in Asia's third-largest economy is slowing.

Tata Motors, India's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, will shut down its Jamshedpur facility for three days this week, in a bid to match sales and production and avoid a piling up of inventories.

Tata Motors had already announced a three-day closure of its Pune factory last week amidst a general fall in demand amidst soaring fuel prices.

In fact, sales of medium and heavy commercial vehicles (M&HCVs) registered negative growth at (-11.07) per cent in May while sales of light commercial vehicles grew 20.18 per cent.

Tata Motors' Jamshedpur factory makes trucks and truck parts.

The company said it would suspend production at its Jamshedpur factory from 28 to 30 June "to align production with demand."
