The Supreme Court today stayed a Calcutta High Court judgement, which had struck down the Singur Land Act that allowed the state government to reclaim 400 acres of land earlier given to Tata Motors.

The Supreme Court also issued notices to Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government and Tata Motors on a special leave petition filed by the West Bengal government challenging the quashing of the Singur Land Acquisition Act by the Calcutta High Court.

Passing an interim order, a bench comprising justices H L Dattu and C K Prasad, however, said there was no need on the part of the state government to part with the land for two months to allow Tata Motors to file an appeal.

The West Bengal government had moved the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta High Court order striking down the Singur Land Act.

The state government said in its appeal filed through advocate Abhijit Sen Gupta that the high court had erred in quashing the Act.

Welcoming the court order, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said, "I am very happy that the Supreme Court gave this order. I am giving Rs2,000 each month to Singur agricultural labourers and landless labourers and farmers. We are also giving two kg of rice at the rate of Rs2 per kg. They are happy. I want them to get their land back. The landless labourers must also get their compensation."
